Baddeley and Hitch (1974) proposed the multicomponent model of working memory, suggesting that working memory consists of a central executive system and two subordinate storage systems (phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad) that handle different types of information processing tasks. Their model has since become influential in understanding the temporary storage and manipulation of information in cognitive processes.
