When it comes to movie-watching, Amazon Prime has almost certainly got a film for you.

1.) 'Knives Out' (2019)

Director: Rian Johnson

Stars: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas

Rian Johnson is without a doubt the most talented director working in the genre film industry today. Knives Out is the whole package: an old-fashioned whodunit that has its finger on the pulse of current society, as well as a respectful homage to the detective movies that came before it, while simultaneously parodying well-known cliches in the process. It's also a terrific chance for generally stoic actors such as Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, and Michael Shannon to let their hair down and enjoy themselves thoroughly.

2.) 'The Vast of Night' (2020)

Director: Andrew Patterson

Stars: Sierra McCormack, Jake Horowitz, Gail Cronauer

Before Andrew Patterson goes supernova, get in on the ground floor with him while he's still relatively unknown. His very first feature film, The Vast of Night, is an intriguing science fiction narrative about a teenage switchboard operator and a radio jockey who, in the 1950s, come upon what seems to be an alien communication. Just think what he might do with a larger budget after this shaky start demonstrates incredible command of both form and tone!

3.) 'The Skeleton Twins' (2014)

Director: Craig Johnson

Cast: Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Luke Wilson

In Craig Johnson's The Skeleton Twins, a dramedy in which SNL stars Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader play suicide brothers, the end of life is just the beginning. Their efforts to reunite the separated siblings fail on the same day, putting the estranged siblings back into each other's circle for the first time in a decade. There is something painful, something endearing, and something – of course – humorous about their attempts to hold it all together. When the celebs lip-sync to the song "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," it is scientifically impossible not to crack a broad smile on your face.

4.) Parasite (2019)

Director: Bong Joon-ho

Stars: Song Kang-ho, Cho Yeo-jeong, Lee Sun-kyun

The South Korean genius Bong's brilliantly dark, Oscar-winning social satire more than lives up to its reputation, thanks to its stellar ensemble, stunning production design, biting humour, and ability to convey both sorrow and disgust for both sides of the eat-the-rich plot. After starting off as a lighthearted robbery caper, this heartbreaking family storey quickly devolves into a deranged hellscape, all the while maintaining the audience's interest. Cook yourself some ramen and get ready for a lesson in fine dining.

5.) One Night in Miami (2020)

Director: Regina King

Stars: Eli Goree, Leslie Odom Jr, Aldis Hodge, Kingsley Ben-Adir

Oscar-winners Cassius Clay (Goree), Jim Brown (Hodge), Sam Cook (Odom) and Malcolm X (Ben-Adir) are all brought together in Regina King's powerful directorial debut feature, a classic of the "what if" genre in which they all go through an electrifying night together against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, which they each influenced in a different way. "What if?" is a genre that Regina King's first feature film is an instant classic in.

6.) The Big Sick (2017)

Director: Michael Showalter

Stars: Holly Hunter, Zoe Kazan,Kumail Nanjiani, Ray Romano

Emily V. Gordon and her partner Kumail Nanjiani, the real-life duo behind the screenplay, give us a Pakistani-American love storey that isn't drowning in clichés. Before Emily is placed into a coma, we meet Emily (Zoe Kazan, who represents Gordon's surrogate), as well as Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani, who plays a version of himself). Kumail now has to deal with heartache, hospitals, and his mother and father on top of everything else.

7.) Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

Director: Sergio Leone

Stars: Joe Pesci,Robert De Niro, Elizabeth McGovern, Danny Aiello, James Woods

Due to its four-hour running time, uneven chronology, large cast, and harsh and violent content, Sergio Leone's 1900s New York crime epic was formerly considered completely impenetrable. Since then, though, the movie has become more popular. All of this seems to be a pleasant mid-afternoon programme to watch in the age of prestige television.

8.) Psycho (1960)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Stars: Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles

After 60 years, three sequels and a shoddy remake of this Hitchcockian precursor to a slasher have been released, yet the most startling aspect of the film isn't what happens in the shower. Everyone knows this already. The most beautiful section of the movie is the fact that the picture stays terrifying both before and after its most remembered moment, with Perkins' sinisterly boyish depiction still ranking among the finest and most sophisticated villain performances in cinema history.

9.) Palm Springs (2020)

Director: Max Barbakow

Stars: Christin Milioti, Andy Samberg, JK Simmons

This hipster take on Groundhog Day brought us out of a time loop that we'd been in for a long time. When we saw the film's wacky, innovative, and touching storey of unsatisfied thirtysomethings having to relive a vacation wedding over and over again, we realized it was just what we needed at that moment.

10.) Attack the Block (2011)

Director: Joe Cornish

Stars: Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Nick Frost

The youngster who played Moses, the brash anti-hero of this ferocious comedy about an extraterrestrial invasion based in Brixton, was obvious from the moment we laid eyes on him. For the first time, the actor, who has been in both the Star Wars films and a Steve McQueen film, will appear in a sequel that aims to reproduce the original film's Amblin-John Carpenter style. We'll be there in full force if it's even half as good as this sci-fi marvel.

11.) I Care A Lot (2020)

Director: J Blakeson

Stars: Diane Wiest, Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage

For the first time since Gone Girl in 2013, Rosamund Pike turns evil in this hyper-stylized dark comedy with ice coursing through its veins. By playing an old woman who works as a court ordered conservator, Pike depicts an opportunistic con-artist who takes advantage of vulnerable elderly people for their money. Due to the fact that her current target has links to a particularly cruel mafia, Pike is forced to play a game of cunning against all kinds of sharks, which is fortunate in that our team is not.

12.) Saint Maud (2019)

Director: Rose Glass

Stars: Jennifer Ehle, Morfyyd Clark

For aficionados of religious terror and tension, Glass' long-awaited A24-backed directorial debut earlier this year was well worth the wait. It's almost excruciating how slowly the storey of a deeply religious nurse caring for a hedonistic dying patient unfolds; although there are plenty of shocks, this is a film where the suspense is meant to be savoured slowly. In this film, Clark provides a heartfelt performance.

Click here to watch or rent Saint Maud.

13.) The Imitation Game (2014)

Director: Morten Tyldum

Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode

Benedict Cumberbatch, with his chiselled cheekbones, plays Alan Turing, the real-life Bletchley Park code-breaker. However, this film isn't only about math and winning rolls of the dice. During World War II, a brilliant mathematician dedicated his life to cracking the Enigma code. In addition to his tragic death, Alan Turing's secret had a lasting impact on the globe.

14.) John Wick: Chapter Two (2017)

Director: Chad Stahelski

Cast: Riccardo Scamarcio, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane

Baroque second chapter of Wick trilogy is certainly the most melancholy of Keanu Reeves' amazing hitman masterwork, with its voyage into the graves of Rome and practically Dantean narrative. Reeves' Baba Yaga slaughters more than 100 competing murders with his car and firearms, knives, his bare hands, and a pencil in this picture, so the description "subdued" is a bit of a stretch.

15.) Amazing Grace (2019)

Director: Alan Elliot

Star: Aretha Franklin

Is there anything further to say about Aretha Franklin's 1972 gospel record performance in a Baptist church in Los Angeles with Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts lurking in the audience? Before or after Franklin's death in 2018, the previously unseen footage is an absolute masterpiece, showing once again why she never faced any real challenges to her reign.

16.) Room (2016)

Director: Lenny Abrahamson

Stars: Jacob Tremblay, Brie Larson

Emma Donoghue's novel adaption by Lenny Abrahamson is a film that slowly reveals itself. A beautiful mother and her son, Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, play Joy and Jack in the film, and their storey of kidnapping is handled with wonderful care.
