STORYTELLING CARDS FOR KIDS
Create 100+ Unique Stories | Imagination & Language Game | Ages 3–7
Turn imagination into an adventure with this fun printable Storytelling Card Game!
My Story Cards is an imaginative learning-through-play resource designed for children aged approximately 3–7. Children mix and match different characters, places, events, problems and solutions to create their very own stories.
Every combination can lead to a completely different adventure!
One story might feature a pirate who discovers a mysterious key on an enchanted island. Another could send Milcho & Sherri into a frozen kingdom where they must solve a problem together. A robot might visit a secret cave, a fairy might discover a treasure map, or a superhero might need help finding the way home.
The possibilities are designed to encourage children to think, imagine, speak and create.
CREATE 100+ UNIQUE STORIES
The cards can be mixed and matched again and again, allowing children to create more than 100 different story combinations.
Because the cards are not tied to one fixed storyline, children can return to the game repeatedly and create a new adventure each time.
HOW TO PLAY
The game uses 5 storytelling categories:
WHO?
Choose the character in the story.
WHERE?
Choose where the story takes place.
WHAT HAPPENS?
Choose the event that begins or develops the adventure.
PROBLEM
Choose the challenge the characters must face.
SOLUTION
Choose how the problem is solved.
Pick one card from each category and use the five prompts to create a complete story.
Children can follow the cards closely or use them simply as inspiration and add their own characters, dialogue, details, endings and imaginative twists.

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY
The game gives children a playful structure for creating stories without telling them exactly what their story must be.
The cards provide the building blocks:
Character + Setting + Event + Problem + Solution
The child provides the imagination.
This makes the resource useful for both guided learning and open-ended creative play.
PERFECT FOR ORAL STORYTELLING
Children do not need to be confident readers or writers to enjoy creating stories.
An adult can read the cards aloud and encourage the child to tell the story verbally.
Try asking questions such as:
“What happened next?”
“Why did that happen?”
“How did the character feel?”
“What could they do?”
“Who could help them?”
“What happened at the end?”
These simple questions can help children expand their ideas and build longer, richer stories.
DIFFERENT WAYS TO USE THE CARDS
Use the resource for:
• Oral storytelling
• Creative story building
• Speaking and listening activities
• Vocabulary development
• Small-group activities
• One-to-one learning
• Classroom storytelling
• Learning centres
• Home education
• Family learning games
• Preschool activities
• Early Years activities
• Creative language sessions
• Story starters
• Imaginative play
• Quiet-time activities
Teachers and parents can adapt the game to suit the child's age and ability.
Younger children can choose just a character and a place and tell a very simple story.
As confidence develops, add What Happens?, Problem and Solution cards to create a more complete story structure.
Children can also invent their own alternative endings or ignore the suggested solution and think of a completely different way to solve the problem.
MEET MILCHO & SHERRI
Milcho & Sherri invite children into the world of storytelling and imagination.
They appear as characters within the game and help make the resource part of the playful ZORI Cowgirl Creative Lab learning world.
FOR CHILDREN AGED APPROXIMATELY 3–7
The game is designed for young children and can be adapted according to their developmental level.
For younger children, adults can read the prompts and help build short verbal stories.
Older or more confident children can combine all five categories and create longer, more detailed adventures independently.

PREPARATION
This is a printable resource.
For repeated use, you may wish to print the cards on thicker paper or card and laminate them before cutting them out.
Keep the five categories separated or organise them into five piles.
Children can then select one card from each category to begin their story.
For an extra element of surprise, place each category face down and let the child choose cards without seeing them first!
FOR TEACHERS, HOME EDUCATORS AND PARENTS
This resource can be used both as a game and as an educational language activity.
Teachers can use the cards for speaking and listening sessions, story starters, group work and creative language activities.
Home educators can incorporate them into literacy and communication learning.
Parents can use the cards as a screen-free activity that encourages children to talk, imagine and play together.
A NEW STORY EVERY TIME
There is no single correct story.
The same five cards can even inspire completely different stories depending on the child using them.
Encourage children to be silly, adventurous, imaginative and creative.
Let them add dialogue, extra characters, unexpected events or completely new endings.
The aim is to help children enjoy creating and telling stories while developing confidence in using language.
