Make learning the alphabet feel like play with this colourful 21-page printable Alphabet Matching Game.
Designed for young learners, this interactive early literacy resource helps children recognise uppercase letters A–Z, connect letters with beginning sounds, build vocabulary and strengthen matching, memory and concentration skills.
Instead of simply looking at or tracing letters, children actively work with the alphabet by picking cards, naming pictures, identifying beginning sounds and matching each picture to the correct letter.
The resource includes 26 Letter Cards, 26 Picture Cards, 4 Alphabet Game Boards, an A–Z Alphabet Reference Page, printable card backs and clear instructions for several ways to play.
With Milcho & Sherri joining the fun throughout the resource, alphabet practice becomes an engaging hands-on learning game!

Every letter appears alongside its corresponding picture and word.
Children can use this page:
• As an alphabet reference
• To check their answers
• To practise letter recognition
• To review vocabulary
• As additional support while playing
It is particularly useful for children who are still becoming familiar with all 26 letters.
HOW TO PLAY – ALPHABET MATCH
One of the main ways to use the resource is as an Alphabet Matching Game.
1. Shuffle the Picture Cards and place them face down.
2. Each player takes a Game Board.
3. Take turns turning over a Picture Card.
4. Say the word.
5. Identify its beginning letter.
6. Find the matching letter on the Game Board.
7. Place the card over that letter.
8. Continue until a player covers all the letters on their board.
This turns letter recognition and beginning-sound practice into an interactive game.
4 GAME BOARDS
Four colourful game boards are included.
GAME BOARD 1
Letters A–I
GAME BOARD 2
Letters J–R
GAME BOARD 3
Letters S–Z
GAME BOARD 4
A mixed selection of letters from across the alphabet for an extra challenge.
Children use the Picture Cards to find the correct beginning letter on their board.
The first player to cover all of the letters on their board wins!
EXTRA CHALLENGE
Game Board 4 contains mixed letters from different parts of the alphabet.
This provides an additional challenge once children become more confident with the sequential alphabet boards.
It encourages learners to recognise letters independently rather than relying on alphabetical order.
MEMORY MATCH GAME
The cards can also be used to play Memory Match.
1. Shuffle all Letter Cards and Picture Cards together.
2. Place them face down.
3. Players take turns flipping over two cards.
4. If the cards match – for example, the letter B and the Butterfly picture – the player keeps the pair.
5. If they do not match, turn them face down again.
6. The player with the most matching pairs at the end wins.
This gives the same printable resource a completely different way to play.
MEMORY & CONCENTRATION
Memory Match adds another learning dimension to the product.
Children need to remember:
• Where cards are located
• Which letters they have seen
• Which pictures match which letters
• Which beginning sound belongs to each picture
This supports:
• Working memory
• Concentration
• Visual memory
• Attention
• Matching
• Letter recognition
BEGINNING SOUNDS
The Picture Cards encourage children to say each word aloud and identify its first letter.
For example:
Apple → A
Butterfly → B
Cat → C
Elephant → E
Moon → M
Sun → S
Zebra → Z
This makes the resource useful not only for alphabet recognition but also for early phonics and beginning-sound awareness.
VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT
Children encounter 26 familiar words and pictures covering a variety of categories, including:
• Animals
• Food
• Objects
• Nature
• Musical instruments
• Everyday vocabulary
The visual support helps young learners connect spoken and written vocabulary with recognisable pictures.
PRINTABLE CARD BACKS INCLUDED
The pack includes coordinating printable backs for both card sets.
There are separate designs for:
• Letter Card Backs
• Picture Card Backs
The backs can be cut out and glued to the reverse of the corresponding cards.
This gives the finished game cards a more complete appearance and makes it easier to distinguish between the two sets when needed.
