The top-down approach to offender profiling involves matching details from a crime scene to a pre-established typology based on typical characteristics. Developed by the FBI, this method categorises offenders as either organised or disorganised, depending on the nature of the crime and the behaviour exhibited during the offence. Profilers use this classification to make inferences about the likely characteristics and background of the offender.

One strength of the top-down approach is its practical application in high-profile cases, particularly those involving serial or sexually motivated crimes. This is because the approach offers investigators a framework to generate leads when physical evidence is limited. It can help narrow down suspects by suggesting personality traits and behavioural patterns, which can be especially useful in complex investigations. However, this strength is often limited to particular types of crime and may not be as effective for more common offences like burglary or assault.

A key limitation of the top-down approach is that the organised/disorganised classification system has been criticised for being overly simplistic. Many offenders display a mixture of traits from both categories, making it difficult to assign them neatly to one type. This lack of clear distinction undermines the validity of the typology. Research by Canter et al. found little support for the existence of distinct organised and disorganised offender types, suggesting that the method may not be based on solid empirical evidence.
