The peripheral nervous system transmits messages between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. The somatic nervous system carries information from sensory organs to the CNS and sends signals from the CNS to muscles. The autonomic nervous system controls internal organs and is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The sympathetic system triggers the fight or flight response, while the parasympathetic system returns the body to a resting state.
