Benzodiazepines
The most frequently prescribed anti-anxiety medications belong to a group called benzodiazepines (BZs), such as Librium and Valium. These drugs, also known as minor tranquillizers, work by reducing tension in the muscles, thereby decreasing arousal and promoting relaxation in the body. Because stress involves heightened arousal, benzodiazepines may help alleviate stress in certain situations.
