Cellulite is a difficult condition to treat. Although it is very normal in both men and women, and there is nothing wrong with it, dimply legs, bums, and thighs continue to occupy our thoughts, and let's face it, we'd all love an instant remedy. After years of brands promising to eliminate the appearance, we now know that simply applying a bit of cream or slathering oil on the skin would not suffice.
However, there are things we can do to help mitigate the problem. This is where the term "orange peel effect" comes from, and how a combined effort to improve one's lifestyle will help to alleviate it.
THE REALITY
Cellulite is simply fat pockets squeezed between bands of tissue under your skin called septa. It forms in areas with the least circulation, implying that increasing blood circulation and loosening fat tissues in those areas is critical.
“I will still hesitate to recommend to clients that cellulite can be removed permanently, but there are certainly steps you can take to help enhance the appearance,” says Dr. Justine Hextall, consultant and dermatologist for The Harley Medical Company.
MUSCLE MASSAGE
To keep cellulite at bay, you must be consistent with everything you do, which includes including massage in your regular beauty routine. “The efficacy of topical creams has a limit,” says Dr. Hextall. “However, massaging with it on a regular basis can improve blood flow, soften the underlying fibrous tissue, improve lymph flow, hydrate and plump the skin, and improve its appearance.”
SO, HOW DO YOU USE IT?
Legology Cellu-Lite Salon Secret for Legs
Is a blend of detoxifying and relaxing oils that helps lighten heavy legs, flush out trapped fluid, and assist in contouring. Starting at the bottom of the affected region and working your way up, massage it in.
Legology Circu-Lite Vacuum cup
This is a fantastic vacuum cup for at-home use that improves leg circulation and skin firmness. Squeeze it shut, position it on oiled skin, then slowly glide it up your legs to pull the lymph upwards.
It leaves a smooth, flawless tint.
Tip: It's more effective to massage items into the skin right after exercise because the ingredients can absorb faster.
EAT A BALANCED DIET
“Toxicity in the body can cause cellulite to form because chemicals and other toxins can get stuck in your fatty tissue, causing your system to become overloaded,” says nutritionist Emma Robertson.
“Whenever possible, buy organic and stay away from hydrogenated fats, sweeteners, refined salt, and sugars.” What are the best foods for detoxing the body? “Green vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, sprouts, and cauliflower help you stay safe on the inside, and bananas and mangoes are great for improving blood flow,” Emma says. Increase your anti-oxidant intake as well; “try berries, coconut, avocado, and green tea,” says the author.
BUY A BRUSH FOR YOUR BODY
“If your circulatory system is stagnant, and you aren't having enough blood flow and nourishment to the outer layers of fat and skin on your hips, bottom, and thighs,” Emma warns, “toxins will accumulate there.” “Body brushing the affected areas every day, always stroking towards the heart,” says the expert.
The Legology Lymph-Lite is the ideal size for comfort and a secure grip.
EXERCISE
Cecilia Harris, a fitness coach, shares her top exercise tricks for preventing cellulite.
“Move your glutes (buttocks) to facilitate blood flow to the region to combat cellulite. We spend the majority of our time sitting on our bottoms, so our muscles are hardly used. Since they walk with their quads and hamstrings instead of their glutes, some people barely use their glutes at all, except though they are driving. Squats, lunges, and other muscle-isolating exercises are fine, but make sure you combine them with aerobic workouts to keep the blood flowing. Keeping cellulite at bay is a never-ending struggle, so daily exercise must become a way of life.”
